Emerald Lakes Piazza Petition website design case study

Community Petition, Emerald Lakes Piazza, Carrara

The challenge

Ocean, Cabukee and Pooches & Pastries are the reason the Emerald Lakes piazza is somewhere people stop, not just walk through. When they were told enforcement could mean no coffee before 7am and far fewer tables, their regulars wanted a way to show support that would carry weight. A paper list on a counter only reaches whoever is in that morning. The community needed something that could be passed around group chats and Facebook and signed in under a minute.

Our approach

The page has one job: get a signature. The opening screen explains what has happened in two sentences, with the sign button and the running total right beside it. Further down it sets out the two issues raised, the three things the petition asks for (including keeping footpaths and walkways clear), a card for each cafe and quotes from supporters. The form asks for a name and address, with the address kept private and never published, plus an optional comment. After signing, each person sees their signature number and a prompt to share the page with neighbours.

The results

The petition has passed 1,000 signatures, and the target has since been raised to 1,250. As a portfolio piece it shows a different kind of site from a business brochure: a single page built around one local issue, easy to share, and simple enough that nobody signing has to think about how it works.
